fat girls and the pixie cut

Do you ever have those times where you’re starting to feel violent toward your hair?  Like if it falls in your face one more time, you might do something drastic?  That’s been me for the last little while.  My hair has been in a holding pattern (not to be confused with this) for several months.

As my bangs grew out and I went back again and again for a tried and true (but ultimately, boring) cut, I started thinking.  What if I finally just cut it all?  Like, really really cut it all?  Went for the haircut that is most dreaded by those of us with round faces? That one that everyone says a fat girl shouldn’t get?  The pixie…

I started doing my research.  I collected photos on Pinterest of celebs with cute cuts.  But everyone had a pointy chin!  How was that going to look on me?  As I’ve gained weight over the last year, I’ve settled firmly into double chin land.  I didn’t think that should stop me (in fact, maybe it should be all the more reason to go for it…) but I wasn’t seeing any photos of girls who looked like me with this particular cut.  I was scared.

Enter Rachele from The Nearsighted Owl.  She is my true inspiration for the pixie cut.  I love her style and she so confidently rocks her cut in its many incarnations.  Mostly I love that she’s an excellent cheerleader for fat girls in general and particularly for fat girls who want short hair.  We need more!

So last Wednesday, I put on my big girl panties and did it!  I love it.  I joked all night that I was going to have phantom hair syndrome… I’ve never not had hair long enough to be in my face.  It’s totally different from anything I’ve ever done before and I think that’s enough of a reason for me to take the plunge.

PS. If you’re someone who thinks, “I could never pull that off because of ___ or until I ___,” just get over it.  As I was checking out, two very slim girls commented on how cute my cut was, and then said, “But I have such a round face, I could never…” Usually I’m not one to challenge a stranger, but I simply pointed to my face and said, “I think I’ve got you beat there,” as I walked out.  To each their own, but if that’s really the reason, I can think of better things to worry about.

2012 is going to be badass

I’m not generally one for New Year’s resolutions. I don’t believe in dieting and I’m not particularly athletic, so 95% of typical NYE resolutions are not that interesting to me.  But right now, I’m motivated so I want to put it out there: I want to do things in 2012.  Here are a few of them…

Educate:

  • Take the Indie:Compass e-course and figure out where I want to take Brownbetty Style
  • Complete all the projects from the Modern Patchwork and DIY Dress Up e-courses.  Maybe take an in-person basic sewing course
  • Learn Photoshop.  Mostly so this blog doesn’t look amateur and I don’t have to constantly bother David to make that happen.

Create:

  • Finish my first quilt.
  • Finish my super secret quilt.
  • Knit something with sleeves – starting with this.
  • Crochet… something.
  • Participate in another craft show… a real craft show this time. (Halfway there! I signed up for one in May!)

Those are all pretty straightforward – set task, find time, accomplish.  It’s the Personal stuff that’s nebulous and vague, so these are my intentions, rather than goals.

  • Be kind to myself about the “happy changes” my body has made over the last year.  Being happy and comfortable in my body as it is is important to me and I wouldn’t trade all the wonderful things from the last year (moving in with my boyfriend, learning to use my Kitchenaid mixer, watching 6 seasons of Dr. Who on the couch while knitting, etc.) for all the smaller pants in the world.
  • Judge Less, Lest Ye Be Judged.  I won’t lie, I’m a judgy person and I don’t expect that to change overnight.  But it really only makes me feel bad about myself. 
  • Remind myself: I’m Fat and it’s Okay.  I’m tall and I don’t see a need to change that. 
  • Find a Pair of Decent Fitting Jeans: I currently have 3 pairs of jeans and each of them annoys me in a different way. Since jeans + tank/long sleeve t-shirt is my go-to casual uniform, it’s worth it to find and invest in one good pair of jeans.  Now I just have to find them… and chuck the others.
